The Quiet Struggle of ‘IO’: A Cinematic Echo of Earth’s Last Breath

Upon its release on Netflix in January of 2019, IO entered an oversaturated world of post-apocalyptic narratives. Director Jonathan Helpert, however, chose to focus on the ‘quiet’ internal struggles of his characters. The film takes place on a dying Earth, as young scientist Sam Walden (Margaret Qualley) attempts to find a way to save Earth’s atmosphere while other evacuees on a spacecraft headed toward a Jupiter moon colony, Io, abandon her. She is soon joined by Micah (Anthony Mackie), a would-be passenger seeking to escape the planet. Together, they confront the deteriorating planet’s final challenges.

The Heart of the Story: Characters in Isolation

Sam represents a narrative of hope and determination. Despite the surrounding isolation, she works on finishing her father’s unfinished project of developing breed of bees that could survive the toxic atmosphere. Her activism in Earth restoration embodies a tenacious spirit and bond to the planet. Unlike Sam, Micah embodies the perspective of the passionate desire to get out, and the possible need to do it before it is too late. The changing dynamics of Sam and Micah’s relationship brings to the forefront notions of companionship, survival, and adaptability of the human spirit.

Behind the Lens: Crafting a Dystopian Reality

The task of filming IO presented a unique set of challenges to the production team. In capturing the desolate beauty, cinematographer André Chemetoff used real, physically impactful locations to conjure a post-apocalyptic world. Coupled with practical effects, the use of real locations to avoid extensive CGI greatly contributed to the film’s authenticity. The film’s embroidery of and fusion with world like soundscape where created by the composer Jackman and Belcher in a muted tone and sad sound.

The Cast’s Commitment: Immersing in Their Roles

Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie deepened their performances through careful character study and preparation. Margeret is known for her detailed performances and tried to immerse herself in the solitude of her character by spending lengths of time in isolating settings, which helped her to understand Sam’s character. Sam Mackie, having delivered dynamic passionate performances in action movies, adjusted to the contemplative focus of the film and worked on the emotional arc of his character. Their on screen relationship helped to strengthen their performances and the narrative.

Audience Reception: A Mixed Response

Critics, after seeing the film, described it as “ambitious”, complimenting the leads on their performances, but stating it had some pacing issues and described it as directionless. The minimalistic approach of the film, which was largely described as lacking contemplative action, was, ironically, described as “deep”.

Thematic Resonance: A Glimpse into the Future

The film IO reflects contemporary issues on the degradation of the earth and the climate. The earth’s decline as portrayed in the film is a direct response to the neglect of the environment and calls the viewers to think of their own legacy. The film shows the viewers the relationship they have with the earth and the legacy they would like to leave.

Concluding Observations: Mental Stillness

Considering its released dated and post-apocalyptic genre, IO: A Film stands out. The sole focus on the protagonist as individual as well as the thematic silence and absence of grand narratives makes the film a negative outlier in a genre otherwise dominated by grandiose film productions and multi-layered action sequences.
