When a Film Became More Than a Film

Some movies come out, and once they have made their money, they vanish. Then there are movies like Three, which refuses to be just a film. It was not just a story out there on a screen. It made headlines, and spilled into chai shop gossips, WhatsApp forwards, and even into discussions on the fashion markets and even light-hearted political talks.

When the film dropped, it was a complete surprise to the audience. It yes was a love story, But the rawness of the heartbreak and the undercurrent of the struggles with mental health accompanied with the music was touch and clasped the attention of an entire generation. It was not just a movie. It was a mood, and a touch for relationships and struggles. It was the reflection that young India needed.

The Story That Struck Too Close

Three told a familiar story, a boy, a girl and the love that was infinite. But what attracted people the most was its reality. There was a rawness to the film, male depression, and the crippling anxiety of losing love. It was the harsh naked truth that people are afraid to touch, and are ashamed to speak about.

Following the screening, some of the younger members of the audience started talking and speculating about their own heartbreaks and breakups. ‘The [Insert Film Title] experience gave me vocabulary for thoughts and feelings and sentiments I can’t formulate for myself’ noted one viewer. It even got to the point where scholars had to describe the increased use of references to Three among college-age students. Having to analyze the references server as proof that the students relied on the fiction to influence their real lives.

The Most Memorable Soundtrack

The score of the movie and the songs composed for it, Three included, certainly made it unforgettable, and the rest of it, as Wells describes, the movie scorms. The songs from Three cinched the film’s grap, not just because of their commercial success; they have come to be used in daily conversations, as well. Heartbroken people, for example, would send each other voice notes of the movie’s miserable tunes in lieu of lengthy voice messages to articulate their feelings. The fact that sad songs about love would be played at weddings proves how ‘First Love’ was glorified in Three.

There’s no greater testament to the film’s legacy than hearing its songs sung with a voice full of pain and sorrow. Instagram and other social media platforms were decorated with fragment of people hauling and showcasing the emotions the film instilled in the public. More, in particular a viral video from Du showed people in a food court belting the soundtrack of the movie as if it were their anthem. The wide and rapid circulation of the film memos was evidence enough to validate its cultural impact.Fashion, Memes, and the Aesthetic of Sadness

Perhaps rather surprisingly, the movie ‘Three’ had a large influence in fashion culture as well. The simple kırta cotton ‘tops’ worn by the leading lady and the relaxed plaid button down worn by the male lead became the go to outfit for many college students. The street vendors in Sarojini and Hill Road ‘Three’ inspired outfits to sell and were often seen as high fashion. This goes to show that movies can be more influential in setting fads than brand advertisements.

Memes made the funny parts of the film the sad moments of the day. The most weak, sad confession of the male lead was made into memes about procrastination, politics, and even cricket. Being able to appreciate sadness, and then placing a funny spin to it is something that is more common in Indian culture, and ‘Three’ was a good starting point.

The Characters in Three

The actors who took on the characters in the movie helped give Three its heartbeat through the fragile love story they weaved. With the girl next door charm, the reputation the female lead had came from being famous. This movie, however, forced her to go to an emotional depth that was more advanced. It was later in her life that she, along with the rest of the world, explained how she was also working through an emotionally draining experience. “For those tears, I didn’t have to put on a performance. Those tears came from a genuine place, and they still do,” she remarked in a interview.

The next path is even more powerful. His life came to a point where an identity crisis in the world of work arose. \In the society of work, she is labeled as “not a commercial hero.” At that point, his character was fighting his inner demons. The ‘hero’ was an ‘actor’ where, just as there is an inner hero, there was a ‘hero’ out there who was willing to battle the stereotypical society. The norms the society we live in, is not in favor of self appreciation. The society is always ready to cherish self love, however, not love for status quo. The norms we live in, is the ‘hero,’ who is willing to battle for self appreciation.

The word, ‘Three’ in the title of the movie.

No one expected the movie to go as far as it’s political stance. The recurrent theme from the students out on the streets resonated with love that could not be silenced. It was in the particular lines from the movie that ‘Three’ could be divided to speak of the love word ‘Three.’ The love that was expressed was the love that ‘Three’ signifies. The word ‘Three’ in the title to many was much more than a word. It was as if it was a part of the word ‘love’ along with the world that they live in.

In the title of the movie, the word ‘Three’ served to no. It was a statement, ‘the love that ‘Three’ portrays.

In an effort to connect with people on the ground, some even quoted song lyrics during their campaigns. The film had achieved the extraordinary: crossing the boundary between art and politics.

Behind the Curtain: The Stories Few Knew.

While the audience sat engrossed, very few people appreciated the strain and effort that went in to bring the film Three to life. The shooting was characterized by the presence of disorder: due to the financial constraints of the movie, many sets were replaced with authentic outdoor locations which enhanced the movies authenticity.

A little known fact is that the male lead’s most memorable crying scene was not in the script. Mr. The actor received some distressing personal news while he was off set, and the director made the decision to capture him while he was off stage. The audience was not only treated with performance, in some portions it was also unending sorrow.

Even the music had an equally dramatic origin. One of the film’s composers said that he was able to finish one of the songs during a single night after an argument with his spouse. “I sang it in a manner which was like I was trying to ask for forgiveness,” and that is the reason it is.

The Unsilenced

Even months after its release, Three was still a sensation. College festivals had themed nights titled ‘Three IMO only’ and social media challenges sprung up that asked users to recreate the most emotional dialogues from the movie. The film gained scrutinty on OTT platforms after its release, and along with the spikes, it was proved that the films staying power was not limited to just the theater releases.

This was a turning point for the cast, the female lead was a draped in national’s lover, and the male actor was a newly gained respect for a performer who was vulnerable in the mainstream cinema. The director on the other was viewed as someone who skillfully removed the skin of Bollywood and showed the raw emotion of it.

Thats what the film was, a feeling. Three was not only watched and examined, it was experienced and lived. It infiltrated the vernacular, the style, sale, protest, and the emotional breakdown playlists. It showed that not every form of cinema has to consist of superheros and stunning non realistic spectacles. Romance, grief, and the internal struggles that we all quietly face and bare does not require any sort of dramatized spectacles, all it needs is simple honesty.

Three is a special film to India, considering that majority of the films try to help the audience escape from reality. Three on the other hand, makes reality impossible to ignore. It is something that transforms a film and its essence, and makes it a rare cultural wave that serves as a reminder of our reality.
