Layers of Elevator Lady On and Off the Screen ‘A story that begins in a confined space’

Elevator Lady is a film that begins with what appears to be a very basic premise strangers trapped together in an elevator yet quickly expands far beyond that. At its center is the ‘lady’ in question, an enigmatic figure who throughtout the course of the film becomes the emotional core. Her role is far from having a utilitarian purpose; she is low functionality, and that is what is captivating, for she is not a mere passenger, as the rest are. She is the lens through which they all expose their cracks, their cowardice and even their humanity.

While the initial appeal of the film was the psychological thriller aspect, the audience remained because the character developments and the rest of the story transformed the elevator into a platform for confession, retelling, integration and even, aggression.

The actress who embodied the character and gave life to the narrative

The ‘face’ of Elevator Lady, was the lead actress who prior to the film was not very well-known. She was off screen during her portrayal of the character, and was passing through some personal struggles which included the typecast because of the role which needed much more emotional depth and enigma, to the pressure of being instantly recognized.

During interviews, she elaborated on some of her real-world practices which included spending hours in real elevators to analyze behavior non-verbally, then working on a personal script while shooting, where she pondered on what her character would think during each moment of silence. The approach gave a rawness to her that the audiences would not forget.

She said that the feeling of being “trapped in another elevator” was, in fact, real, the only difference being the elevator was instead fame, stifling and with no escape. The difficulty in escaping the parameters of the role was very real. In the aftermath of the film’s release, life in the real world started blending with her character. Rather, it was a good thing. Directors began offering layered and complex, psychological characters.

The combination of warmth and intensity, came in handy when she was described by her co-stars, to whom she offered her cuddle with the intent to offer emotional support, during the long pauses of the shoot, to the younger, over stressed, actors in the clips, all of whom were anxious and confined in a cramped shooting space, while still being very deep and focused on the take. This created a bond like no other within the cast.

Capturing shots inside an enclosed structure – the crew’s greatest test.

The set of the modular elevator built on the soundstage complete with rooft structure for lights and removable walls for the cameras was the most intriguing part of the film’s behind the scenes section. The crew was able to eliminate the use of an elevator for filming the movie but the claustrophobic nature of the built set was just as challenging. The miniature structure sweltering as bulbs heated up and the levels of oxygen dropped due to the long pauses. The crew started to resort to the use of improvisation and deal with the whimsical sense of feeling “method trapped.”

There was a certain excitement within the crew as there was an improvisation and freedom to insert the own. They all agreed to undergo long and uninterrupted pauses due to the fact the pauses as a whole alongside “diary pages” had to match the rhythm of the elevator. There was a certain focus that began within the crew as recollections were bought forth regarding hopping and the girl who was in the shape of the water was the one who helped him.

The manner in which people during theses phase of the movie began to create ideas regarding the elevator lady and the elevator lady. Atlant apparently highly appreciated with the link the film had with cultural myths a certain lady, a certain lift and other spirits who were suicides and relatives who hand.

Regarding the quote by the actress, “The real elevator wasn’t between floors, but between what people wanted to believe and what they feared was true,” the commentary, to the extent that it buttressed the debates, added to the mystique of the film and long after its release, it became a cult conversation piece.

An actress made a swift ascend to stardom achieving recognition, but she wasn’t the only one to benefit from the film, with the rest of the cast receiving new, abundant opportunities as well. One of the actors was typecast into comedic book and was shocked when he was suddenly being offered dark thrillers due to his chilling monologue within the film. During a later interview, one of the young actresses stated that she was given the courage to pursue her passion after the release of the film.

To the director, the film was the start of a new chapter for the director, as he was earning recognition for transformed indie shorts. His work for the Elevator Lady film was now a part of the international film festival circuit. The Elevator Lady was also the foundation of the first of an ongoing series of ‘ bottle thrillers’ and had an indelible effect on filmmakers for her use of raw, uncluttered and uncomplicated dialogue.

The Confines of Storytelling

To the owner of a cinema Elevator Lady was a part of storytelling that went beyond box office figures. Despite the astonishing success of contemporary films with unbelievable CGI, Elevator Lady had the audacity to straight jack them and put them in a box with nothing but human tension. That level of ingenuity left an unparalleled legacy: with the right emotions, put equally truthful actors, and there could be a profound universe hidden behind four walls.

To the team, it was an unorthodox approach to the art of acting. Forgetting the imaginary fears, the actors in Elle Elevator Lad had no fears and that is what a lot of the audience members appreciated. The film was the perfect paradox in that it was confining for everyone, but liberating to the audience to envision greater.
