When Desire Burrows Beneath the Bonds of Friendship

Adore (2013) written by Anne Fontaine which is an adaptation of the novella The Grandmothers by Doris Lessing does not consider the entire novel to be a mere love story. Instead loving one’s mother, a friend and loving a friend’s mother are all with a single element of longing, which are all intertwined. The film takes place on the shimmering beaches of Australia, and focuses on two friends for life Roz (Robin Wright) and Lil (Naomi Watts) and the bizarre reality of them being intertwined with the sons of each of their friends. This reality which seems to be an extremely dramatic situation becomes for a reflection on taboo love and the complex ways people defend love’s justification.

Roz and Lil, as childhood friends, and almost inseparable, have the two sons which they raise together and side by side to each other with each other. When the sons turn to adults, a whole new level of curiosity emerges with each other which disrupts the whole concept of inter-family relations, as well as friendships. Rather than facing harsh judgment and criticism, these women sit back and witness history and develop a form of balance that is truly delicate, and secret in nature. The story’s tension is built on the absence of open argument, instead shifts focuses to glares, thoughts of guilt, and shame stirred by the fact that the awareness both.

Meaning Behind a Film Fan Reason.

Many critics described as less plausible or sensational about a film named “Adore”. “Adore” was panned by many critics after it was showcased during sundance. However, audiences especially those on the internet started weaving up theories about the film. While some thought the beach itself was a form of limbo, or heaven that drowned with every wave and bordered on the shores of sin, others thought the relationships represented the mortifying act of Roz and Lil losing touch with their youth.

Although, the same fans that dismissed the romance were more intrigued with the idea that both women filled their emotional voids on loss Lil and Roz was left with. Life felt haunting to those individual and as they filled their void, the more they realized the less they had to live.

In an interview, Robin Wright herself recognized this interpretation. She stated that it was a woman not in love with Roz, but rather a woman trying to stop time, a woman trying to save a part of herself through the boy who, to her, was a symbol of innocence and familiarity. Naomi Watts also suggested that the bond Lil had with Roz’s son had more to do with attachment to Roz than romantic passion — almost as if the two women were trying to connect through proxy.

Alternate Endings that People Created

Unlike the rest of the movie, the ending of ‘Adore’ is rather subdued: the other women, long since parted, and the sons, who had moved on, years later married and returned with their families to the secret cove, sharing a last glimpse, which suggests that the relationships were never really severed. Some viewers found this to be impressive, while other found this to be lack of resolution.

The ambiguity of the ending allowed for the emergence of multiple theories. One suggested that the film should have ended with Roz and Lil devoid of contact, forcing the viewers to confront the unfortunate truth that, some relationships can never be redefined. Another much speculated ending suggested that one of the sons may have, with feelings of betrayal, turned the quiet beach drama into a social scandal by publicly exposing the revolving affairs.

In the press, the director, Anne Fontaine said that she did not want a dramatic ending on purpose. “It’s not that in real life you have explosions all the time” she explained to the press. Fontaine stated, the film incorporates the quality of a memory, in that it is dream like, but can also be incomplete and unresolved. However, even today, many readers believe in alternate endings and even write fan fiction – one about Roz and Lil secretly loving each other whilst growing old together.

How the Performances Shaped the Conversation

The primal scene of the brussels sprouts brings the show performers together and gives the audience a point of focus. It lays a role in female empowerment and in demonstrating the reality of women’s lives is so strict, confined and desperate. What it’s privileges is a shift in point of view. Both Wright and Watts performers some parts of women who couldn’t be more unlike. Wright explained in an interview that her personally perceived character, who was in her fantasy a roguish European wannabe, was in fact painfully normal. It was a slew of meandering locations which made the project so much more shiny, costly, so fun to watch and devoid of absolutely miserable, self-pity.

All this served to make the film an entirely new and specific proposition and form. It offered global stage almost for the first time to performers of lower class, Shreya Marie and Majula Rani, who in the candid manner characteristic of the show freely lift for the audience four brussels sprouts which then become a center of a adroit dancer. Their unexpected frilliness and effortless flourish points to the gaze being liberated in its admirations from the actors, soaring upwards, freely flapping and unrestrained, to an unison of a thousand slightly giddy pixies. Their presences speaks of a mundane happiness, effortless and sweet like a pancake, entirely domestic.

The Beach as a Silent Character

In the context of academic reviews, the online discourse around a particular film’s setting is an underappreciated aspect of the film. Set along the coast of New South Wales, the film captures seascapes and uses golden light to create an otherworldly, ethereal effect, as if capturing a painting of a lost Eden. Water, sand, and horizons in the work of cinematographer Christophe Beaucarne suggests that the film’s characters were encapsulated and insulated from the surrounding apocalyptic world.

Some viewers even half-jokingly suggested that the beach was the film’s actual, “third lead.” Fontaine herself said she structured the film so that the settings were more than just a background photo; they were reflections of the characters states of mind: calm and serene, yet with strong undercurrents.

The Rest is Silent

To enhance the quiet intimacy of the film, few people know that the work, Adore was filmed with a significantly low budget even by Hollywood’s standards. Fontaine’s preference for a small crew meant that the level of intimacy on set could be controlled. It is reported that Naomi Watts and Robin Wright spent weeks before shooting just rehearsing the lines, not to mention the physical intimacy of the shared silences and walks, so that the believability of their lifetime bond was better represented.

The film faced certain challenges because of its intimate nature. Distribution was problematic because some countries would not release the film widely due to its controversial topics. As it was, the marketing team was very challenged in figuring out which posters would not sensationalize the story. The final decision to depict Watts and Wright calm and seated on the beach was made to avoid possible scandal, which was also the aim of the other posters. The team made sure to avoid sensationalism in whatever way possible.

The Film That Refused to Be Boxed

Critics of the film, Adore, often forget that it was the public who kept the film alive with morning and evening discussions. Its lack of abnormal sexual dealings was chilling, and very few box office sales were made. Indian movie goers often puzzled over the film only after it had been screened at multitudes of festivals as well as streamed. Adore stirred the waters of friendship, morality, and motherhood in conservative Indian households.

This is most likely the reason Adore is still discussed in many film forums and is well known amongst cinephilia. It is not only about two women and two young men. Adore also makes the viewer think about the boundaries set, the boundaries set, and the rationale made for the choices most would consider to not follow any conventions.
